Lunar New Year
I would like to wish all of our families who are celebrating the Lunar New Year this week a wonderful celebration. This celebration provides us with an opportunity for us all to come together, embracing different traditions and fostering unity. It’s a time of joy, reunion, and fresh beginnings, which is certainly an important reminder for what is important for our school community. My prayer for you, your family and our school is that this new year brings you abundant opportunities, good health, happiness and an awareness of God’s goodness, love and presence in all you do. May we have a sense of assurance that comes from knowing that God’s love and goodness is with us all no matter the circumstances that life may throw our way across this year.
If you want to know more about the Lunar New Year celebrations and join in, you can visit this link.
Standing In Solidarity With Mt Sinai College
You may have heard on the news this week that one of the schools in our community, Mt Sinai College, was subjected to a reprehensible act of antisemitic graffiti. Mt Sinai College, like our own, is a relatively small K-6 co-educational faith-based school, committed to nurturing children in an environment of respect and inclusion.
There is no place in our society for hate crimes of any kind. No child, no family, no school should ever have to endure persecution or fear because of their religion—or for any reason at all. Schools should be places of learning, safety, and belonging, not of division and hate.
As a school, we stand in unwavering solidarity with Mt Sinai College. To their students, staff, and families: You are not alone. We stand with you in strength, unity, and hope, reaffirming our commitment to a world where love and respect prevail over hatred and ignorance.
Thank you St Andrew’s Cathedral School
I am once again grateful for the annual opportunity provided by St Andrew’s Cathedral School (SACS), which offers a partial scholarship to a Claremont student (boy or girl) for entry into Year 7 in 2026. This long-standing scholarship, awarded for many decades, reflects the strong relationship between our two schools and recognises the outstanding calibre of Claremont graduates. Please refer to the application criteria closing 9 February, below.
Today is a Fabulous Day
What a fantastic start to the school year! This week, our Years 1 to 6 students have returned, settling seamlessly into their new learning spaces, while our newest Kindy students have taken their first exciting steps into their seven-year journey of Primary School. It’s a milestone moment—not just for them, but also for their families and our staff, as we witness their enthusiasm and curiosity come to life.
Equally significant is the beginning of the final primary school year for our Year 6 students. They have stepped into their leadership roles with maturity and commitment, especially in their role as Kindy Buddies, setting a wonderful example for our younger students.
A warm welcome to all our new students and families across all grades. We hope you quickly feel at home at Claremont College, a place where learning, friendships, and belonging flourish. Here’s to a fantastic year ahead!
Welcome to each of our Kindergarten students and also to their families:
Theodore B, Isabelle C, Olivia C, Eloise C, Sophie H, Max J, Walter K, Zoe L, Mark L, Olivia L, Amelia L, Lita L, Zachary L, Emily L, Angie M, Maxwell M, Hudson McG, Xavier McN, Benjamin M, Archer N, Jacob N, Ellis P, Leon R, Harmony-Jae S, Maximillian S, Alexander S, Luke , Louis T-H, Josiah U, Jordan W, Jonah W and Estelle Y.
We also warmly welcome the following children (and their families) to our school:
Juha P (1), Atticus C (2), Max I (2). Edem G (4), Zara M (4), Dexter D (5), Rory H (5), Lark G (6) and Leo I (6).
I hope you enjoy all the new routines and rhythms of school life and truly feel and experience a sense of belonging to our special school community.
Our Newsletter this week is BIG! Please take the time to carefully read all of the information and many important updates, and especially note the section on ‘Traffic Arrangements’. For the safety of all concerned, please do not use Judge Lane at the back of the school to access Judge Street, do not use Judge Street to then drop your child/ren off on Coogee Bay Road, and PLEASE… no U-Turns at the front of the school on Coogee Bay Rd.
I look forward to seeing you all at our Parent Information Evening on Tuesday, 11 February. I also extend a warm welcome to parents, family and friends of our Year 6 students who will each receive a leadership badge at our Student Leaders Induction Chapel Service next Friday, 7 February in the school hall commencing at 8:50am

Opportunities for Parents to meet your Child’s Teachers
At Claremont we value opportunities to establish these important connections between home and school as we partner with you to support your child/ren to grow, learn and flourish over the coming year. We have a number of opportunities for you to connect with teacher/s in the coming weeks.
- Week 2 – Year 6 Leadership Induction (Friday 7 February)
- Week 3 – Parent Teacher Evening (Tuesday 11 February)
- Week 4 – Parent/Teacher Kindy Meetings. Details about these meetings will be in next week’s newsletter.
- Week 4/5 – IP Weeks: meetings for parents and students who are on an Individual Learning Plan(IP). These parents will be contacted directly.
- Various Weeks – Parent/Student/Teacher Goal Setting Meetings (Y1-6). Details about these meetings will be in next week’s newsletter.
Further details about all ‘Meet the Teachers’ will be provided in the coming newsletters prior to each event.
Claremont Teams 2025
This week your child/ren was/were excited to find out who the teachers on their grade are. The students on all grades do not know yet, who will be the teacher who will be pastorally responsible for each of them personally, as this will be confirmed by the end of Week 3. The reason for this is because we believe it is better for all of the children to get to know all of the staff on their grade equally and the same applies for the staff getting to know the students. Across the year, the only times that students are divided into their ‘class’ groups are for their timetabled specialist classes or for some lessons where the teachers decide that the intended learning would best suit two mixed ability groups.
During the next three weeks of term we will not be diarising any parent-teacher-student meetings, however in the meantime, we ask that you make contact with the following staff if you have any urgent messages you need to have passed on:
Mrs Cameron or Miss McKersie for pastoral care discussions or concerns;
Mrs Ford for academic or curriculum discussions or concerns;
Ms De Rossi for diverse student needs; and/or
Ms Neville or Miss Kawada in the front office for medical needs.
Team Leaders at Claremont College, 2025
You may have noticed in the ‘welcome letters’ home to parents that we added who the Team Leader of each grade is. We have had Team Leaders for a number of years now and they serve a very specific and fundamental purpose in leading each grade. Team Leaders change from year to year and often depend on a number of factors including:
- A staff member’s willingness to take up this middle leadership role for the year;
- The prior experiences of the staff member; and
- Their preparedness to lead others.
The Roles and Responsibilities of the Team Leaders:
The primary roles of the Team Leader is to:
- Support the staff in their team with wisdom and compassion;
- Work alongside the team members in a collaborative way and ensure that collaboration is the cornerstone of the teaching and learning environment;
- Understand and utilise current educational thinking and innovative practices;
- Demonstrate and live by Christian values; and
- Essentially be the gate-keeper of the year group.
Team Leaders meet fortnightly to:
- Develop their leadership skills;
- Work on projects together; and
- Learn from and support each other.
This year we are pleased to announce our Team Leaders for 2025 are:
Kindergarten – Miss Abby Carter
Year 1 – Miss Josie Alexander
Year 2 – Mrs Hannah Davis
Year 3 – Mrs Deborah Ko
Year 4 – Mrs Emily Eu
Year 5 – Ms Kristina Wright
Year 6 – Mr Darren Oen
Specialist Teachers – Mr Joel Geering
Please note, we are very fortunate to have many very experienced staff who would also be capable of taking up the responsibility of Team Leader, but each year we only have a few places, so do not read this and think your child is not in the ‘Class Group’ of the Team Leader and become disappointed. All of our teaching staff are exceptionally capable and accomplished teachers. The Team Leader is NOT the go-to teacher for every child in the grade; the go-to teacher for each child is the teacher who is pastorally responsible for each class grouping and these will be sent home by the end of Week 3.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Deputy Principal – Academic Excellence, Innovation & Pedagogy
Parent Information Evening
Our Parent Information Evening for 2025 will be on Tuesday 11 February from 6pm. This is an important evening for all parents (not children). This evening serves a number of purposes and will provide an opportunity for you to meet and hear from your child’s teachers and other professional support staff, and to join a presentation which will be delivered by Mr Thomas, Mrs Cameron and Mrs Ford, about important news, some updates and the school’s vision for 2025. This presentation will also provide the opportunity for you to be introduced to the whole Staff Team of 2025.
Meet the Grade Team (6:00PM TO 7:00PM)
When you arrive please, head directly to the classrooms which will be open (from 5:50pm) for you to look around and settle in. The teacher presentations will commence at 6:00pm. All of the team will introduce themselves and will outline some of their classroom routines, expectations and plans for the year. You are also reminded that teachers will address general issues and that it will be impossible for them to discuss the progress of individual children on this occasion.
2025 Vision (7:10PM TO 8:30PM)
Everyone will be asked to move to the hall where Mr Thomas will introduce the entire staff team and speak with parents about a couple of important issues. Mr Thomas, Mrs Cameron and Mrs Ford will share with parents our vision and important news for Claremont College for 2025. We are all very excited about the many things that have been planned for this year so we do hope that you will make a special effort to attend.
Traffic Arrangements
We would like to remind all parents about the traffic procedures we have implemented which help to make our school as safe as possible for the children, parents, staff and community. Children should be dropped off and collected in the SCHOOL ZONES on either Judge Street or Coogee Bay Road where teachers will be on duty from 8:15am to 8:40am and from 3:10pm until 3:30pm.
You are also reminded of the 40kph school zone speed limit. The streets surrounding the school are quite narrow, so please slow down to ensure the safety of residents and of children. In order for us to get children safely into cars, it is imperative that all drivers comply with the following:
- Please delay your arrival until after 3:15pm as queuing before 3:10pm causes major congestion. We often experience our worst problems with traffic because parents arrive early. Please allow us to get the children to the gates first to enable the traffic to flow more smoothly and to avoid staff having to ask you to move on. If your child is not at the gate upon your arrival be prepared to be directed by staff to go around the block.
- Please even consider arriving closer to 3:30pm. Children are supervised while they wait.
- Do not choose to park directly in front of the school gates (morning or afternoon). Follow staff instructions by moving forward to the front of the zone to the furthest available numbered cone, to enable as many cars as possible to pull up behind you. Please do this even if you are the only car in the zone upon your arrival.
- Do not jump the queue of traffic. We consider this to be very bad manners!
- If your child is not at the gate when you pull up, you will be asked to drive around the block again to keep the traffic moving and to comply with our traffic management plan.
- Please do not get out of your car as teachers will assist children if this is necessary.
- Despite the fact that we wish to move things quickly, please ensure that your child’s seat belt is securely fastened before pulling away from the curb.
- Please display a clear sign with the family name. This request is not only for new families. You can always request a laminated family name sign (or signs) at the office.
- Do not do U-turns anywhere within the vicinity of the school.
- Do not double park across the road on Coogee Bay Road, and escort your child across the road.
- If you are in a queue, do not move into the school zone until you know for certain that space is available. If you end up stopping in the ‘No Stopping’ zone, by law you are liable to be booked AND lose demerit points.
- Only drive along Judge St if you are collecting your child at the Judge St gate, not at Coogee Bay Rd gate.
- Do not park across the school or neighbours’ driveways if you are visiting the school or attending events or functions.
- Please be patient with each other.
Please inform Grandparents or carers of these expectations should they collect your child/ren. The cooperation and patience of all parents and carers (Grandparents, babysitters and others) are essential if we are to make both our school pick-up and drop-off zones and the surrounding streets as safe and efficient as possible for everyone.
Please remember that strict penalties apply in all school zones. In addition to a fine, demerit points also apply.
Positive Behaviours @ Claremont
As we start our new year, all grades have been learning about the importance of rules. From this year, all of our school rules will be centred around our 3 core values:
- We are Collaborative
- We are Innovative
- We are Compassionate
We expect all students to show respect to their new teachers, to their peers and to their school.

Kindergarten Term 1 2025 Overview
The Buddies Program
The Kindergarten – Year 6 Buddy system is a beloved program at Claremont College. It generates opportunities for connections between our youngest and oldest students. The program provides Kindergarten with a kind and helpful older peer that provides support in the Kindergarten student’s transition to ‘big school’. For the Year 6 student, it provides them with an opportunity to take responsibility for another, to show care and provide guidance to another younger student. It is wonderful to see the growth it fosters in both student cohorts.
In organising the buddies, the school needs to factor in House allocations to evenly distribute the number of students across the school as well as work within the constraints of the student numbers in the grade and the gender ratio across each cohort. So with this in mind, we ask that students and parents approach the allocated buddies with an open mindset, be receptive to give things a go and a willingness to collaborate with others for a positive outcome.

Library @ Claremont
Lunar New Year
It has been lovely to welcome all students back to the library and wonderful to hear how much reading had taken place over the summer holidays. We have started celebrating the Lunar New Year and the library display features a range of stories from a variety of countries that celebrate the Lunar New Year. Library club at lunchtime has been great fun as we make Chinese lanterns and dragons to decorate the library space.

This story is set in a city in old China and is centered around a little girl called Ruby who is unlike most of the girls of her time. Instead of getting married, Ruby is determined to attend university when she grows up, just like the boys in her family. Inspired by the life of the author’s grandmother and paired with evocative watercolour paintings, Ruby’s Wish is an engaging portrait of a determined young girl and a family who rewards her independent spirit.
Bookstall Term 1
On Tuesday, 25 March (Week 9) we will be holding a bookstall in the school hall. This year we have teamed up with Gleebooks to run the bookstall. This will coincide with Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day for the infant grades. After the event in the playground, visitors will be invited into the hall to make purchases from the bookstall. Books can be purchased for students’ home libraries or to donate to the school library. A donation certificate will be placed in each donated book with family details. Children from the primary grades will also get a chance to make purchases on the day.

Music @ Claremont
Welcome Back to Choir
I’m very excited to be returning to Claremont after my maternity leave last year and can’t wait to start choir again this year. I hope the students are too! Please see the information below about joining the choir and first rehearsals.
For students that would like to join the Senior choir (Year 5 and 6), please come into the hall on TUESDAY morning Week 2 (Tuesday 4 February) at 8am. Rehearsals will continue to be held on Tuesday mornings at 8am.
For students that would like to join the Junior choir (Year 3 and 4), please come into the hall on THURSDAY morning Week 2 (Thursday 6 February) at 8am. Rehearsals will continue to be held on Thursday mornings at 8am.
Please make sure students are punctual every week, as we only have 30-40 minutes of rehearsal.
I look forward to seeing everyone again and welcoming any new members!
Claremont Ensembles 2025
We are planning to launch some new music ensembles and projects this year. If you are interested in joining any of the ensembles, seeking music tutoring, or have other suggestions for music initiatives at Claremont, please complete the Google Form linked HERE. This will help us gain a better understanding of student interest across our various programs.
Additionally, we are pleased to offer music tutoring in strings, guitar, piano, drums, and flute, as well as String Ensemble and Rock Band, with skilled tutors available to support your child’s musical growth. For more information on tutoring opportunities, please visit our website.
Our new drum tutor, Alex Mateer, is an experienced musician, educator, and composer with 29 years of experience in performance, education, and composition. He is set to begin his role as the Drum/Percussion and Garageband Tutor at Claremont College in 2025. He is wanting to start up a Claremont College Drumline and is looking for enthusiastic students to join this exciting musical ensemble! Not only will you learn how to play powerful rhythms on a variety of drums, but you’ll also develop important skills like teamwork, discipline, and leadership. Drumline is recommended for students who have been playing the drums for a minimum of 1 year from years 4-6.
We are also hoping to start our Concert Band up again, which involves brass, piano, percussion and woodwind instruments.

It is expected that they wear their full PE uniform and not just part (e.g. just wearing sneakers with their normal uniform, or sports jacket with normal school shorts).

It is important that students wear their Claremont swimming costume under their sports uniform, and bring their sports bag packed with a towel, goggles, underwear, house swimming cap and thongs or sandals each week. IPSHA Carnivals/Carnival Progression

There will be two IPSHA Representative Carnivals this term. IPSHA Swimming will be held on Tuesday 4 March, and IPSHA Cross Country on Wednesday 2 April. Teams for these representative carnivals will be selected based on the results of our school carnivals this term.
Representative Sport
Each year selections take place for students in Years 6 (and on occasion, exceptional athletes in Year 5) to represent their school, region and state. Students who play at an ‘elite’ club or representative level are invited to trial for a number of sports throughout the year. For students in Year 5 and 6, please contact me ASAP if your child is at the expected standard in a particular sport and would like to attend. Please note, these trials take place in school hours and parents are responsible for attending with their child. IPSHA and CIS Sport trials include netball, basketball, cricket, rugby league, rugby union, AFL, golf, hockey, soccer, tennis and gymnastics.
Gala Days
A number of gala days will be available for Year 3 to 6 students to participate in throughout the year. Students are encouraged to attend any trials or training that may occur, and whilst every effort is made to place students in a team, this is not always possible. Although not compulsory, morning skills programs are a great way to develop the skills and confidence necessary to represent Claremont at a gala day/event. Information about each gala day will be communicated closer to the event, and students will need to register their interest to be eligible for selection.
Communication and Registration
Each week information about sporting events, results, carnivals and featured students can be found in the newsletter. In addition, wet weather alerts for extra curricular sports will be communicated by sms by 7am.
Online registration is required for all extra-curricular sport programs, as well as our major Claremont carnivals: Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country. Please ensure registration is completed by the date specified to assist in the smooth running of all events. Registration links can be found on your Parent Portal noticeboard throughout the year.
Code of Conduct
We take very seriously our students’ right to enjoy sport safely and enjoyably, whether played educationally, socially or competitively. We believe the utmost respect must be shown between students, staff, parents and officials at all times. Please take a minute to read with your child our “Sporting Code of Conduct” and ensure we model all areas of sport at Claremont in an appropriate spirit of fun, participation and encouragement.
Sporting Achievements – Claremont Champions
I encourage families to email me outlining your child’s success and participation in any sporting arena throughout the year, including photographs. Students enjoy being acknowledged for their achievements in class, at assembly or in the school newsletter. Sometimes our Mums and Dads also shine in sport and events, and we love to celebrate with you! Please send all correspondence to [email protected].
Here are some of our champions from over the holidays:
In December, a group of Year 4 boys (now Year 5) achieved an incredible victory in the East’s Basketball League grand final. In a nail-biting finish, they triumphed 27-25, showing true grit and determination in every play. Under the guidance of their coach, Eric Setiwan, the team’s courage and teamwork shone through to secure the win.
Congratulations to Lucas S, Josh P J, Rapha A, Hart A, Beau C, Alexander P, Aston T, and Mason T- an unforgettable effort from a remarkable team!
Also in December, some of our Year 3 boys (now Year 4) made their mark in the Sydney Super League soccer grand final with an unforgettable victory. In a heart-stopping match, Zephyr’s equalising goal pushed the game to a penalty shootout, where the team held their nerve to claim the win.
Congratulations to Oliver L and Zephyr for their incredible teamwork and determination.

Head of Sport and PDHPE
General Information
Claremont is a Nut Aware School
Due to a number of children and staff having high-risk allergies, our school is a nut-aware zone. Peanut Butter and Nutella sandwiches, along with cookies, biscuits, muesli bars and other food products containing nuts, must NOT be brought to school under any circumstances. This is very important, as highly allergic students may have an anaphylactic reaction leading to death. Some students are so sensitive that nuts on another person’s breath or on their hands can lead to a reaction. At this stage, products that “may contain traces of nuts” are permitted. Thank you for your cooperation with such a serious and important matter.
No Birthday Treats Please
Again this year, treats, cakes or food will not be permitted for birthdays. Instead, when a child celebrates their birthday, they will be honoured in different ways eg: special jobs, singing, birthday badge/sticker/certificate etc. This is to avoid unnecessary sugar intake and to promote healthy eating whilst at school.
Urgent Medical Attention
If your child suffers from a serious illness or allergy (including asthma) and requires medication to be administered during school hours, please contact Ms Sallie Neville (Mon-Tues) or Miss Eri Kawada (Wed-Fri) in the office immediately. Phone (02) 9399 3217 between 9:00am – 3:00pm or email through [email protected]

P&F News
Welcome Back!
It’s a privilege to step into the role of P&F President this year and to be part of such a vibrant and supportive school community.
Since joining the P&F several years ago, I have loved getting involved with the school and have formed many wonderful friendships, all while making a positive contribution to the environment where our children learn and grow.
This year, I’m excited to build on the incredible work of past committees and explore new ways to support our school. An enormous thank you to James Jap for his dedication to the P&F over the past two years and for leading our team through many successful events.
I am thrilled to have so many new faces joining our committee this year and look forward to working alongside you all. See attached list of our new P&F Exec team and the Class Reps for 2025. Please feel free to reach out to any of us with questions and ideas, or just for a chat!
Whether through fundraising, events or simply bringing people together, the P&F plays a vital role in fostering connection and belonging. I look forward to strengthening relationships between families, staff and students and encourage everyone to get involved; whether by fundraising, volunteering or attending events, every contribution helps make a difference.
This year is already shaping up to be a big one, with many exciting events lined up!

Opal School Travel Passes
Applications are now open for 2025 School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) travel.
Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card (including a Term Bus Pass) for the first time will receive their School Opal card at their nominated postal address from mid-January 2025.
Students who require a School Opal card or travel pass but have not yet applied need to apply or update their details as soon as possible.
In the Opal network, students should travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.
Students living in rural and regional areas will receive their travel pass from their nominated transport operator. It may be issued via their school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some rural and regional operators do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.
Terms of Use
Students using School Opal cards must tap on and tap off in line with the Opal terms of use.
This includes travel within the approved times between 6.30am and 7.00pm from Monday to Friday on school days only. Students must use their Child/Youth Opal card for any travel outside these times.
All students are required to comply with the Student code of conduct. The code of conduct aims to ensure the safety and well-being of school children and other passengers. It is important that parents ensure their child is aware of this, as failure to comply with the code of conduct can result in a suspension from travel.
